I designed this project to classify the lands surrounding Cayuta Lake in New York and determine their suitability for potential Osprey habitats using NAIP imagery. Osprey prefer to nest close to water, and in wide-open spaces. Areas that were classified as irrigated grasslands and were within a 1,000 meter buffer of the lake were deemed "highly suitable". Areas that were classified as irrigated grasslands and were outside of the buffer (but within the image classification) were deemed "moderately suitable". For this project, I collected training sites in the field myself, and created a confusion matrix to determine the classification's accuracy.Â
